Hudson 'very relaxed' in new digs

IN a city known for its unabashed affection for polar bears, it's fitting that the zoo's new bear will be introduced on Valentine's Day.

The Assiniboine Park Zoo will unveil Hudson, its 15-month-old polar bear, on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre (IPBCC).

Hudson replaces Debby, the zoo polar bear who died a couple of years ago. The community's attachment to Debby was so great, hundreds of people attended a memorial service for the animal.

Hudson arrived two weeks ago via cargo jet and is adapting well to his new surroundings, zoo officials said.

"He's very relaxed in his new home and he certainly loves the snow and winter weather," said Tim Sinclair-Smith, director of zoological operations at the zoo. "Hudson is a wonderful addition to our zoo family and we can't wait for the community to meet him."

The outdoor enclosure at the IPBCC has been renovated and expanded to specifically accommodate polar bears and is three times its original size.
