Evander KANE is a lightning rod for anyone with a hate on for young, provocative men who get so rich for playing a game they love. The fact that the left winger managed 57 points in 74 games last season in a professional sport that 99.9 per cent of Canadians can only dream of reaching seems to escape the "haters" on the sidelines.

And now Mr. Kane, the 21-year-old Winnipeg Jet from Vancouver who loves to sport an in-your-face style, has stirred the pot of petty grievances once again: They hate me because I'm black, he charges. Posters online and in the Twitterverse are biting back. Hard.

Some accuse him of playing the stereotype. Others are less oblique. All are anonymous, because that's what gives them the gall (and protection from legal potholes that yawn for racists, bigots and others who prefer slinging spurious allegations to civil discourse).

It takes only a cursory spin through the Internet's unfiltered marketplace to understand how people of colour, Canada's native peoples, those of the Jewish faith and so many others are targeted with impunity while the vast majority of bystanders simply see what passes in front of them.

People are castigating Evander Kane for suggesting he's bashed by bigots who hate the colour of his skin. But he is right. The anonymity of the Internet reveals the racism thriving around us. Evander Kane called it out, and Winnipeggers should, too.
