Kijiji users allegedly scammed by city man

A 28-year-old Winnipeg man is facing charges of fraud over $5,000 after two people believed they were buying a 2005 BMW online through Kijiji.

Winnipeg police said the incidents stemmed from January and February, when individuals in Regina and the Toronto area used the Kijiji online advertising service to buy cars from a Winnipeg man.

In the first instance, the Winnipeg man agreed to trade a 2005 BMW to the Toronto-area man for a 2004 Acura and $4,500 cash. The Toronto-area man electronically transferred $2,250 directly to the suspect but the deal never went through.

Police said it's alleged the suspect used photos and details of the vehicle found on a website and presented it as his own.

In the second instance, a Saskatchewan man agreed to buy a 2005 BMW M3 for $25,000. The victim forwarded $19,000 to the suspect but the deal never went through.

Police said it's alleged in the second instance the suspect took a used car for a test drive, photographed it and then posted it for sale on Kijiji.

Police said victims filed complaints with police in Saskatchewan and Ontario, which led to Winnipeg police making the arrest Tuesday.

Police said the money was not recovered.

The arrested man was released on a promise to appear in court.
