Man handed 84 charges in robbing spree
A 19-year-old Winnipeg man is facing a whopping 84 charges following an armed-robbery spree this month.
Police say the crimes began May 2, when a business in the 400 block of St. Anne's Road was robbed at gunpoint. Over the next two weeks, another seven businesses were robbed of cash and cigarettes. Most of the robberies occurred on the south side of town, including two on Pembina Highway.
During one of the robberies, the suspect fired his gun. There were no injuries.
On May 16, the suspect robbed a business in the 3000 block of Ness Avenue and was arrested later the same day in the area of Alexander Avenue.
Jamie Harper faces 84 counts of robbery and firearms-related charges as well as probation breaches.
Also charged is a 17-year-old boy. He is facing two counts each of robbery with a firearm, wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime and failure to comply with a sentence.
Arson squad probes West End garage fire
ARSON investigators are trying to determine the cause of a garage fire in the West End overnight.
Firefighters were called to 816 St. Matthews Avenue at about 1 a.m. Saturday to battle the blaze.
Firefighters said the fire caused about $28,000 in damages, including damage to a vehicle and a nearby shed.
There were no injuries.
Garage fires have become a chronic summer problem in Winnipeg.
Gunpoint robbery at St. Vital store
A store on St. Anne's Road was robbed at gunpoint Friday night.
At about 7 p.m., a man entered the store in the 700 block of St. Anne's and held up a 42-year-old clerk. The robber demanded cash and other items police would not name.
The suspect fled. The store clerk was not injured.
Police are looking for a Caucasian man, 5-8 tall with a medium build and a brown or black beard.
