Manitoba-born doctor given Order of Canada
A Manitoba-born doctor who holds a number of titles can now add officer of the Order of Canada to the list.
Dr. Prabhat Jha, 45, an epidemiologist and professor at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, was named to the order on June 29 for services to global health and epidemiology.
"I'm especially proud to receive this award because it recognizes the transformative power of epidemiological research to reduce premature deaths worldwide," he said.
Jha grew up in Manitoba and studied medicine at the University of Manitoba, and later at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
"He considers Manitoba his home, and he has deep roots here," said Jha's proud father, Bidhu Jha, the NDP MLA for Radisson.
Dr. Jha, who lives in Toronto but visits Manitoba from time to time, holds the Canada Research Chair of Health and Development and is the founding director of the Centre for Global Health Research. He is the father of two girls and he is currently spending time in India as the leader of a study of premature death.
