Manitoba salutes athletic excellence
Olympian Hughes among latest inductees to hall of fame
One of Winnipeg's most celebrated athletes will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this year.
Olympian Clara Hughes is one of five athletes, two builders and two teams that will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame during its 33rd induction ceremony at the Victoria Inn on Nov. 3.
"Not only is Clara an exceptional athlete but also a tremendous role model for our province and deserves the highest honour we can bestow upon her.
"When she announced her retirement we felt that it was important to honour her unparalleled athletic career as quickly as we could," said Jeff Hnatiuk, president and CEO of Sport Manitoba.
Hughes is the only athlete in history to win multiple medals in both summer and winter Olympic Games. She has two medals in cycling and four in speedskating. She retired following the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.
She was awarded the Order of Manitoba in 2006 and made an Officer of the Order of Canada a year later. She was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
"Clara has been contributing to our museum collection for a number of years and her induction was just a matter of time," said Don Pincock, president of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
Hughes will enter the hall with:
-- Ed Belfour, athlete, hockey
-- Kelly Hand, athlete, sailing
-- Michael Ireland, athlete, speedskating
-- Harry Langford, athlete, football
-- Sandy (Newsham) Maskiw, athlete, softball
-- Morris Glimcher, builder, all around
-- Grant Standbrook, builder, all round
-- 1978 and 1980 University of Manitoba Bisons men's volleyball teams
-- 1992-95 University of Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball teams.
The public is invited to attend the induction ceremony. Tickets are $125 at halloffame.mb.ca.
