Manitobans' bravery to be rewarded

THREE Manitobans will receive an award for bravery from Gov. Gen. David Johnston.

On Friday, Daniel Chrusch, Vincent Bradley Fontaine and Candace Smith will receive the award at Rideau Hall.

On Nov. 19, 2008, the three Manitobans rescued a man from a burning house in Pine Falls.

Smith, Fontaine and his elderly father woke up to find their living room on fire and the home's exit blocked. Fontaine climbed out of the bedroom window. His father was unconscious in the hallway and Smith was trapped in the bedroom.

Chrusch, their neighbour, entered the house and called out to the occupants to come towards his voice. Smith grabbed the elderly man and dragged him towards Chrusch and Fontaine, who helped bring him outside.

The three individuals are among 44 Canadians who will receive Decorations of Bravery.

This is the 40th anniversary of the awards, which recognize people who risked their lives to try to save or protect others.
