Obama also praised India's progress on civilian nuclear power.
Both men said they were focused on reducing India's poverty.
Singh also said he was looking forward to meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but said, quote, "even though expectations have to be tamped down." Sharif will meet with Obama next month.
