Canada presses Russian APEC host on support of Syria on eve of leaders' meeting

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia - Canada is pressing its Russian APEC host to reconsider its support for the regime in Syria.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird registered his displeasure in a meeting here with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, earlier this week.

The foreign ministers of the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum were meeting ahead of the leaders' summit set for this weekend.

Russia has blocked UN Security Council resolutions that would have sanctioned the regime of President Bashar Assad, which has been trying to put down an 18-month uprising.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper arrived in Vladivostok on Friday for what is expected to be a trade-focused summit.

Before heading overseas, Harper told a business audience in Vancouver Thursday that the onus is on China to show that its state-run enterprises can be trusted to play by the same rules as Canada.
