ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government is launching a new program to follow up with people who leave emergency rooms without being seen by a health professional.
The province says that as of Monday, a nurse will contact anyone who left one of 12 Eastern Health emergency departments due to long wait times or other reasons.
A HealthLine nurse will make the call within 24 hours to check on the person's symptoms and make sure they receive treatment if required.
The program could be expanded to the rest of the province if the Department of Health and Community Services deems it a success.
The province says it is developing other services for the program to help people with mental health and other chronic conditions.
