Regina bylaw allowing power cords over sidewalks tripped up over safety concerns

REGINA - Efforts by Regina city council to plug in a revised bylaw allowing drivers to string electrical extension cords across sidewalks to power their vehicles' block heaters has temporarily shorted out.

A vote on the bylaw was delayed Monday when Coun. Shawn Fraser said the need for drivers to start their cars in frigid weather must be balanced with the need for unobstructed walkways.

City administrators changed the bylaw's wording after a Regina man protested a ticket he received in 2010.

An altered version that would allow cords to be placed across walks as long as they do not create an obstruction was put before council Monday.

Regina's bylaws need unanimous approval by council and Fraser's concerns about enforcement led to the issue being put over until the next meeting.

Fraser hopes to find a reasonable solution by then. (CJME)
