Return of bicycle joyous for woman

When police returned parts of what used to be the recumbent bicycle Gemma Yates-Howorth rode to keep her legs strong, the 23-year-old woman wept from her wheelchair and threw her arms around the officers' legs in gratitude.
"She just was so... excited," said Yates-Howorth's mother, Sarah Yates-Howorth.
Even though the condition of the bike upon its return was a far cry from the way Gemma last saw it, Sarah described her as grateful, with the "hugest grin on her face."
"I could tell the officers were very moved," Sarah said.
The bike, which Sarah reported missing on July 25, was returned to the Yates-Howorth house by the Winnipeg Police Service Aug. 1, but not in its original form.
Sarah described the specialized bicycle as being "in pieces" and said she gave the parts to Freedom Concepts, the maker of the bike, to see if it can be repaired.
If it needs to be replaced, the cost will exceed $4,500 and the family is already looking at a considerable cost to have it repaired.
"The case is under active criminal investigation," Sarah said.
"The Winnipeg police always kept us informed. They were courteous and helpful, and they returned the bike in the middle of the night," she said. "Good comes out of things like this sometimes. You do lose some faith in the goodness of people but people's response and support for us has been overwhelmingly positive, and that certainly restores your faith in humanity, especially in Winnipeggers."
Sarah said donations should be sent to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba.
