Reviews launched after sex abuse case dropped
POLICE and justice officials have launched separate reviews of a child abuse case that ended suddenly this week with the accused walking free on a technicality because police took too long to act.
Provincial court Judge Brent Stewart dismissed all criminal charges against a 32-year-old man on Wednesday, saying a breach of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms had occurred. The judge took aim at the Winnipeg Police Service, blaming them for waiting 18 months to execute an arrest warrant against the man.
Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said Thursday police are reviewing the investigation. Also, senior Crown officials are now dissecting Stewart's decision to consider a possible appeal.
The allegation was that the man sexually abused his girlfriend's seven-year-old daughter frequently.
