Conservation minister's son faces robbery charges

A man has been charged with robbery after turning himself in Thursday.

Gordon Elijah Muller Mackintosh, 22, had been considered a suspect in the robbery of a financial institution in the 2200 block of McPhillips Street on April 20.

Mackintosh is the son of Manitoba Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh, a spokesperson for the minister confirmed.

The minister's son is also being charged with disguise with intent.

"This incident has been painfully bewildering for the Mackintosh family. There were health and medication issues here that professionals are now dealing with," the spokesperson said.

The minister, who served as First Nations leader Elijah Harper's advisor when he objected to the Meech Lake Accord in 1987, named his son after Harper.

This is not the first time a Manitoba politician's son has been charged with criminal activity.

Toban Schreyer, the son of former governor general and Manitoba premier Edward Schreyer, faced arson charges after allegedly setting fire to his Winnipeg home in December 2008.

Three years later, the Crown stayed the arson charges against Schreyer, who was fighting bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice Deborah McCawley ruled police violated his rights during his 2008 interrogation, prompting the stay of proceedings.

A statement from the Mackintosh family is expected to be issued through the family's lawyer in the coming days.
