Shelter sought after Point Douglas blaze
Fourteen people were evacuated when a rooming house caught fire Friday night in Point Douglas.
The blaze began just before 11 p.m. on the third floor of a rooming house at 145 Euclid Ave., near Hallet Street.
No one was injured, but roughly 10 units were called to battle the fire, which caused $450,000 in damage to the building and its contents.
The fire is under investigation by the arson strike force.
Neighbours said the rooming house, which was boarded up Saturday, was a source of trouble in the neighbourhood. In 2007, it was nearly set ablaze by a young arsonist who leaned a burning mattress up against the side of the house.
Staff at the North Point Douglas Women's Centre said they were helping some former tenants get back on their feet. Several had come into the centre, just down the street on Euclid, Saturday.
Those displaced by the fire need toiletries, furniture, clothing, and the Women's Centre staff say they are happy to accept donations.
Also Friday, just before midnight, firefighters were called to another, smaller fire in the West End. The fire began in a second floor suite at 777 Sargent Ave.
There was $25,000 in smoke and water damage to parts of the six-storey apartment building. There were no injuries.
On Saturday evening, the house sat quiet, save for a shrill noise that could be heard through open windows. A red pickup truck with a flat tire remained in the driveway behind the home.
Glass, garbage and a piece of furniture lay scattered in the yard.
At least one ground level suite at the back of the home looked like it didn't sustain much damage.
