Runner reaches midpoint in trip across Canada

CANDACE Sutherland is halfway to her goal of running across the country to raise money for four charitable causes that have affected her family.
Sutherland, 17, reached Deacon's Corner east of the city on Friday and will put her feet up until going back there to restart her Vision 4 Hope on Monday.
"I thought the running would be much easier," she said.
"It's so much harder than I thought it would be. Some days I am really tired, but I just try not to let my thoughts get to me on those days."
What does help her during the hours of pounding the pavement is knowing that every step she takes is helping the four charities she has chosen to support: the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the Salvation Army.
"I'm proud to be contributing to these causes -- my family has been affected by the diseases," she said.
Toughest part of the run so far? Kelly's Mountain in Nova Scotia.
"It was seven kilometres uphill. It took us two days to go up," Sutherland said.
"And I find I'd rather run in the rain than the sun. With the sun, you get hot, but the rain keeps you nice and cool."
It's not the first time Sutherland has run for charity, but it's the longest.
She has run several marathons through the years to raise food for charity and last year, by jogging 21 days from Winnipeg to Thompson, she raised more than 10,000 pounds of food.
Sutherland started her latest run on March 18 in Newfoundland and she hopes to get to Victoria, B.C., by December.
