Small town loses businesses to fire

Firefighters work to contain fires that destroyed two businesses and damaged two others Sunday in Austin, a small community about 110 kilometres west of Winnipeg.

THE downtown area of Austin was wracked by fire that destroyed two businesses and damaged two others on Sunday.

The midday blaze destroyed Kathie's Beauty Salon and an attached suite, and Ernie's Warehouse. It also caused smoke and fire damage to two additional businesses in the community about 110 kilometres west of Winnipeg.

Portage la Prairie RCMP, along with the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner, are investigating the fire that broke out about 11 a.m., but it's not deemed suspicious in nature. Emergency Medical Services were also on scene but no one was hurt in the blaze.

Damage is estimated to be several hundred thousand dollars.
