Soldier charged in Shilo shooting

BRANDON -- A soldier has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of another soldier at CFB Shilo early Sunday.

A source said the victim was shot twice in the leg just before 6 a.m. at his housing unit on Kingston Avenue.

Shortly before the shooting, the victim had punched a man in the face while ejecting him from a party at the home.

The man who was punched then left but returned and shot his assailant twice in the leg.

Court documents indicate the weapon is a Remington .45-calibre semi-automatic handgun.

The shooter then fled but was followed by another man who had been at the party.

The gunman fired another shot before escaping, but a suspect was arrested nearby within minutes. Police recovered a gun.

The injured soldier was taken to Brandon hospital. He reportedly remained there as of Monday morning, but staff wouldn't supply an update on his condition.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating.

A public affairs officer for that military police unit, Maj. Greg Poehlmann, described the victim's injuries as non-life-threatening.

Poehlmann said the seized firearm is not a military-issued weapon.

Clarence Joseph Stillman, 40, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and numerous weapons offences. He is a master corporal in the Armed Forces.

The case was brought forward in a Brandon courtroom on Monday afternoon, but was adjourned to Thursday.
