Cavendish wins fourth stage of Giro d'Italia; Pellizotti retains overall lead

CATANZARO LUNGOMARE, Italy - Mark Cavendish of England won the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday in a group sprint finish while Franco Pellizotti of Italy retained the overall lead.

Cavendish, who rides for High Road, finished in an unofficial time of four hours 49 minutes nine seconds.

Belgium's Rik Verbrugghe of Cofidis rode for 164 kilometres in a solo breakaway before being caught by the group with 20 kilometres left.

The Giro continues Wednesday with a 203-kilometre leg from Belevedere Marittimo to Contursi Terme.
