A Winnipeg Hells Angels and a former city police officer were arrested early Saturday for allegedly possessing a loaded handgun and a small amount of ecstasy, police said today.
Hells Angels Billy Bowden, 31, remains in custody and Ken Houston, 38, was released from custody to appear in court at a later date.
Police said officers with the organized crime unit stopped Houston’s Dodge Durango in a backlane in the 500 block of Corydon Avenue at about 3 a.m.
Police did not say where the gun and small amount of ecstasy was found.
Bowden has been a Hells Angels for about five years and Houston resigned from the Winnipeg Police Service in July 2003.
Houston’s father Det. Ronald Edward Houston was the last city police officer killed on the job. He was killed early June 27, 1970 while on a stakeout.
A year ago Houston lost a bid to get a liquor licence for a planned restaurant on Corydon Avenue. The application was denied by a civic committee after a number of area residents complained about the popular area becoming too noisy.
