A jockey was seriously injured when his horse flipped over on him during a post parade at Assiniboia Downs on Saturday evening.
Darren Dunn, director of operations for Assiniboia Downs, said the jockey, who is in his late 20s, suffered a fractured pelvic bone and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Dunn said the behaviour of the horse the jockey was riding became erratic for an unknown reason.
The horse flipped over on top of the jockey, who was unable to remove his feet from the stirrups in time to prevent being crushed.
"He was in a lot of pain...it just goes to show you it's a dangerous sport," Dunn said.
The jockey is from Venezuela and is in his fourth season of riding in Winnipeg for the summer.
Dunn couldn't say what caused the horse to flip.
