Liberal leader Jon Gerrard and Inkster MLA Kevin Lamoureux are promoting the fund-raising goal of the Friends of Upper Fort Garry this morning.
Gerrard and Lamoureux, with a group of supporters, are dressed in period costumes, waving signs and distributing pamphlets to support the effort to preserve the Upper Fort Garry site. The group are on the east corner of Broadway and Main Street, near the Via Rail Station.
Liberal MLAs Dr. Jon Gerrard, left, and Kevin Lamoureux were part of a group of supporters of Upper Fort Garry greeting motorists passing near the fort on Main Street this morning.
The Friends of Upper Fort Garry have until Saturday to raise $10 million but the group remains $3.7 million short. The province had committed $1.5 million to the total — far less than requested — but Premier Gary Doer recently floated a trial balloon, suggesting the site could be turned into a provincial park.
The Friends want to build a $9 million interpretive centre around the historic gate but the city had tentatively sold the parcel to a development company that wants to erect a 20-storey apartment tower. The city is prepared to scrap that deal but only if the Friends come up with $10 million by Saturday.
Gerrard and Lamoureux and their supporters will be on Main Street until 8:30 a.m.
