Grade 3 students at Sansome School used their recess this morning to get some exercise -- and help some serious scientific research.

The kids put on pedometers to measure their steps and the intensity of their movements during a vigorous morning recess at the St. James-Assiniboia School Division school.

Dean Kriellars, researcher at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, with part of the Grade 3 class during a recess study this morning at Sansome School.

Researcher Dean Kriellars of the Manitoba Institute of Child Health has been tracking both active and sedentary children as part of a research study intended to find ways to promote physical activity during school.

Kriellars recently published some of his findings in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.

Kriellars says children need to take at least 15,000 steps a day to ward off obesity and to maintain strong bones and healthy muscles, but average only 10,000 steps a day on school days.
