Thrashers advance to semifinal

The Winnipeg Thrashers, representing the West region, ran their record up to 57 wins and one loss today, putting them only two more wins away from the Telus Cup Midget AAA National Hockey Championship, being played in Arnprior, Ont.

Mark Stone scored his second goal of the game with only 10 seconds remaining to give the Thrashers (5-0) a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves (3-1-1), and moving them into tomorrow's 1 p.m. semifinal against either Cole Harbour McCains (Atlantic) or Séminaire St-François Blizzard (Quebec). The Blizzard (1-3) were playing Ottawa Valley Titans (host) in the final round-robin game this evening, and a win would move them past (Atlantic) Cole Harbour (1-1-3) into fourth place.

Tomorrow's 6:30 p.m. semifinal pits Sudbury against the (Pacific) Calgary Buffaloes (2-1-2).

Stone, whose first goal came in the second period, was joined by David Conrad with a pair and Mathew Bodie had the other Winnipeg goal.

Sudbury, which led 1-0 in the first on a goal by Deven Stiller, also got goals from Craig Laliberte, P.J. Taus and Stefan Herrington.

In goal for the Thrashers, Joey Rewucki stopped 12 shots, while Landon Noel handled 26 Thrashers' bullets.
