The Winnipeg woman has Maggie May, her eight-month-old Wheaton Terrier, to thank for coaxing her from a deep sleep and urging her to get out of her home that was filled with toxic carbon monoxide.

Maggie May was honoured today in Toronto as one of five inductees into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame. The hall recognizes pets and service animals that demonstrate bravery and loyalty in saving the life of a human being.

The incident occurred last November. DeCourcey, who wasn't feeling well, decided to lie down for a nap in the afternoon but suddenly woke up with Maggie May sitting right on her chest, licking her face and whining loudly.

When DeCourcey, who is deaf in one ear, sat up she heard the carbon monoxide detector going off. Both she and her dog made it out of the house safely, and the fire department and gas company were called to deal with the toxic levels of gas in the house.

There are currently 138 animals -– 114 dogs, 23 cats and one horse --in the Purina Animal Hall of Fame.
