The value of building permits in Winnipeg rose only 3.5 per cent in March, but that was still far better than in Calgary and Edmonton where building permit values fell 45 per cent and 21 per cent respectively.
Statistics Canada reported this morning that Manitoba and Alberta were two of four provinces to post declines in permit book values in March.
Manitoba saw values drop 5.8 per cent to $116.6 million in March, compared with $123.8 million in February.
Permits for residential construction in Manitoba rose 10.2 per cent, but that was more than offset by a 40.2 per cent fall in non-residential construction.
Across Canada, both residential and non-residential sectors declined in March, led by Alberta, which posted an overall reduction of 32.9 per cent. Excluding Alberta, the value of building permits would have increased by 5.1 per cent instead of falling 4.5 per cent nationally.
