Ten people were left homeless after a fire broke out in second-floor suite of a two -storey residence in Point Douglas just before 10 p.m. last night.
Nobody was injured. The fire is under investigation by the Office of Fire Commissioner.
Fire crews were estimating damages in the rental property in the 100 block of Austin Street near Jarvis Avenue after the smoke cleared just before 11 p.m.
One tenant who did not give his name said he spotted smoke coming from a suite in the house and called 911. He said he then knocked on every door to make sure nobody was left in the house on his way out.
The tenant who lives in the suite where the fire started was away for the evening, District Fire Chief Claude Scott said from the scene.
"I'm dismayed. Something like this shouldn't happen," said one man who identified himself as the owner of the house. He did not want to give his name.
