The Global Human Rights Torch Relay arrives in Winnipeg this afternoon with the support of a dozen local groups concerned about human rights in China.
The torch is travelling to more than 100 cities around the world to raise awareness about human rights violations in China in advance of this summer’s Beijing Olympics.
There will be a rally the Legislative Building from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and a music festival from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Oodena Celebration Circle at The Forks with a lineup of 10 local acts.
Speakers at the rally will include Coun. Jenny Gerbasi, NDP Wolseley MLA Rob Altemeyer, human rights lawyer David Matas and Maria Cheung, a University of Manitoba professor and representative for the Canadian Falun Dafa Association.
