Sailors from Winnipeg’s namesake ship, the HMCS Winnipeg, arrived in the city this morning after completing a 338-kilometre charity relay run for the Firefighters Burn Fund of Manitoba.
They arrived at the No. 1 Fire Hall at 65 Ellen St. at about 11:30 a.m., and presented a cheque to the charity.
Nine crew members from the Canadian vessel started their run on Monday at the Saskatchewan border. They were accompanied by soldiers from the Canadian Forces Base Shilo.
Altogether, 25 sailors from the ship have been in Manitoba for the past week, visiting schools and communities throughout the province to raise awareness about the navy.
