Smoke in cabin forces plane to land

An Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Ottawa was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Winnipeg after the pilot radioed in the smell of smoke in the cabin.

Air Canada Flight 138 made its unscheduled landing at about 9:30 p.m. and it was tentatively scheduled to resume its flight by 10:15 p.m. It's estimated time of arrival in Ottawa was 2 a.m. because of the delay.

One flight attendant required medical attention for smoke inhalation, the Free Press has learned.

An airport spokeswoman did not have details on injuries, just basic information on the landing.

"It is on the ground. The pilot radioed in because there was smoke in the cabin," Christine Alongi, spokeswoman for the Richardson International Airport Authority, said Monday night.

Winnipeg Fire Service was on the scene at the airport alongside the plane, an A 321 aircraft, the airport spokeswoman said.

She referred further questions to the airline's spokespeople in Montreal.

The Free Press has learned there were 144 people aboard the flight.

One flight attendant required medical attention after breathing in flumes from a burned out fan motor that caused the smoke inside the plane.

The attendant was the only person aboard who was reported hurt.
