A program is being launched this spring that will provide licensed practical nurses with advanced knowledge and specialized skills required to competently practice in a psychiatric/mental health care setting, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba said this morning.
A chronic skilled labour shortage of mental health practitioners has prompted the development of post basic psychiatric mental health education for licensed practical nurses in northern Manitoba.
This education will equip licensed practical nurses in the NOR-MAN and Burntwood Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) with the necessary skills required in the delivery of comprehensive, competent and quality psychiatric/mental health care for adults and geriatric residents, the college said.
Licensed practical nurses, as members of an interdisciplinary health care team, have a role within a collaborative nursing network and a contribution to make in the delivery of acute psychiatric/mental health services.
Ongoing collaboration involving Employment Manitoba, Department of Competitiveness, Training and Trade; NOR-MAN and Burntwood RHAs, the University College Of The North and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba will further ensure the health care needs of Manitobans are being met in their communities.
The end result will be licensed practical nurses with additional competencies that directly benefit clients who require a specific type of care.
For clients with Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety, depression and complex mental health issues, licensed practical nurses will be there to provide care and support.
