Melita Inn shooting nets charges

Two Winnipeg men face charges after a rifle was allegedly fired at people in the parking lot of the Melita Inn late Friday night, RCMP said this morning.

RCMP responded to the Melita Inn around 11:30 p.m. Friday to a call of a high-powered rifle being shot at persons in the parking lot.

Police say an argument took place among four men inside the hotel that continued to the outside parking lot.

Once outside, police believe one of the men produced a high-powered rifle and pointed it at two men. The gun was fired with the round striking the ground to the left of the pair.

After the round hit the ground, an unknown object hit the back of the neck of one of the victims, causing a small cut which did not require medical treatment.

Another man who heard the shot came out of the hotel to see what was happening. He approached the man who fired the rifle and he was punched in the jaw, police say.

The three victims retreated into the bar, locked the bar doors and called police.

Police determined that the two suspects were likely no longer in the area and police evacuated the bar. A spent .223 caliber rifle casing was found in the area of the shooting.

Both suspects identified by witnesses surrendered to police.

Charged with assault, point firearms, use a firearm in commission of an offence, assault with a weapon, possess weapon without firearms licence, dangerous use of firearm, are 38-year-old William Allan Todd Fisher and 18-year-old Jamie Darren Murray Wahl, both from Winnipeg.
