Kicker in, kicker out

ONE new kicker has arrived at Winnipeg Blue Bombers' training camp while another has been sent home.

American rookie Alexis Serna, who's only about 5-foot-6, donned a practice jersey and looked fairly impressive on Day 7 of the CFL club's training camp today as he seeks to unseat veteran Troy Westwood as punter/placekicker.

The Blue Bombers brought in a new kicking prospect, Alexis Serna, who looked impressive at practice today. He is hoping to unseat veteran kicker Troy Westwood (7).

Meanwhile, the Bombers released Canadian rookie Darryl Wheeler of Hamilton, a free agent who was brought into camp as a punter to push Westwood but simply couldn't adapt to kicking field goals.

So in addition to Westwood, the 17-year veteran who struggled most of last season, the Bombers still have two Americans -- lanky punter/placekicker Brian Monroe and now Serna -- in camp pushing to depose Westwood.

Monroe and Westwood each looked impressive as they practised punting this morning, attempting to angle the ball out of bounds near what would be the opposition goal line. Serna, who only recently took up punting, drove a few 50-yarders with low trajectories.

On the receiving front, import Romby Bryant continues to impress, twirling around in a 360-degree turn to make a brilliant catch of a Kevin Glenn toss this morning.

Rookie Canadian Aaron Hargreaves, the Bombers' second-round draft choice, continues to sit out with a hamstring injury.
