Environment Canada has issued a severe weather watch for the city of Winnipeg after issuing warnings for most of southwestern Manitoba, including the RM and city of Portage la Prairie and the Headingley area.
As of about 7:30 p.m., Environment Canada’s website said severe weather watches for Brandon, Carberry and Treherne had ended.
A line of intense thunderstorms is moving eastward at 40 km/h, said an update from Environment Canada. The storms are on a direct path towards Winnipeg. Around 5 p.m., Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Winnipeg with a potential for large hail and damaging winds.
Wind gusts up to 160 km/h were reported in the Souris area between 3 and 4 p.m. while wind gusts of near 90 km/h were reported at Portage at 4:30.
Radar also indicates some rotation aloft indicating these storms are organized and maybe capable of producing tornadoes. At this time no reports of tornadoes have been received.
Ping-pong sized hail has been reported in the Reston area and loonie size hail has been reported just south of Melita with this line.
