Proposal being taken for Native-run casino

The Doer government and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs have thrown the door open for proposals to build the province's third Native-run casino near Brandon.

A committee of chiefs has been tasked with choosing the winning proposal before October.

It's the latest move in the long casino saga that has griped Western Manitoba for months. Last March, Brandon residents voted to reject a joint proposal by the province and the AMC to build a downtown casino. Since then, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has been mired in a battle with the five Dakota First Nations over which First Nation should get the right to build the next casino.

Today, the province and the AMC issued a request for expressions of interest - the first step toward a more formal request for more detailed proposals. It calls on any interested band to submit a proposal of the casino within 100 km of Brandon. Profits from the casino will be shared among all the Manitoba bands.

The selection committee includes South Indian Lake Chief Chris Baker, Fisher River Cree Nation Chief David Crate, Nelson House Chief Jim Moore and Skownan First Nation Chief Harvey Nepinak.
