The use of photo radar for speed enforcement in construction zones has dramatically increased safety conditions at roadway construction zones according to Winnipeg police.
Police started using photo enforcement because of ongoing safety concerns at the Bishop Grand Boulevard bridge construction work. According to police statistics it has made a difference.
During the first three days of use in both directions on the bridge (April 29 to May 1) a total of 1,967 citations were issued to motorists speeding through the construction zone. During the last three days of available data (June 18 to 20), a total of 532 citations were issued.
The percentage of vehicles speeding during the same time periods was reduced from 7.6 per cent to 1.4 per cent.
“The road construction industry is delighted with the reductions of speeding motorists and continues to support the Winnipeg Police Service efforts to further reduce the number of speeding violations,” said Chris Lorenc, president of the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association in a prepared statement.
Winnipeg police will continue to conduct speed enforcement at construction zones throughout the summer.
