BLINK isn’t bitter about not getting the ball enough for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Running back Charlie Roberts, who’s been a virtual non-factor for the struggling 0-2 Bombers so far this season, said today following practice that he needs and wants more touches. But he’s not whining about it.

“Ummm...I need to be able to contribute and I guess if more touches is what that takes, then that’s what it takes,” said Roberts, nicknamed Blink for his ability to fly past opponents in the blink of an eye.
“I’m not demanding or asking for more touches, I think we’ll find our way and usually when we find our way, I’m involved,” he added with a smile. “So it’s all good.”
Roberts, usually at or near the top of the heap in terms of CFL rushing yardage, is only sixth with 19 carries for 87 yards. He had just six carries in the Bombers’ 38-24 loss to Montreal last week and he said that, of course, he wants the ball more.
“But I understand the situation,” he said as the Bombers continue to prepare for Friday night’s game at Canad Inns Stadium vs. the B.C. Lions, also 0-2. “We fell down by a lot of points and you can’t run the ball and expect to get back in a CFL game, not when you’re down 28 points.
“So I knew I wasn’t going to see the ball from the first quarter on...It’s just circumstance.
“The first play of the game in the last game was a running play. We wanted to come out and establish the run. But we got stuffed on the first run and some things went the wrong way and the next thing you know, we’re down 28 points.”
Roberts said he’s not paying much attention to the CFL rushing race, currently led by Canadian Jesse Lumsden of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. But he said he’s confident he’ll pile up enough yardage to get back in the race.
“I don’t intend on letting anybody out-rush me, whether it’s a Canadian or not,” he said. “I really don’t know who’s leading right now so I really don’t care until my name is at the top.”
