Spence Street by U of W closing for good

Almost one block of Spence Street alongside the University of Winnipeg will be closed to vehicle traffic for good, city council’s downtown development committee decided today.

Spence Street between Portage Avenue and Ellice Avenue is already closed to all vehicles except buses, fire trucks and ambulances.

Now, the University of Winnipeg wants to permanently close the middle section of the block and build a new one-way connection between Young Street and Spence Street that will allow Winnipeg Transit buses to loop around CBC Manitoba’s headquarters.

City councillors unanimously approved the plan, which will see the university incorporate part of Spence Street into its expanding Portage Avenue campus.
