Manitoba was one of six provinces to post an increase in new vehicle sales for May, according to new Statistics Canada figures released today.
The federal agency said 4,054 new cars and trucks were driven off dealership lots during the month. The seasonally adjusted total was a 1.0 per cent increase from the 4,015 vehicles sold in April, and a 4.5 improvement from the 3,880 sold in May of last year.
Manitoba’s month-over-month gain was the smallest among the six provinces that posted an increase. Nova Scotia led the way with a 12.4 per cent increase.
Nationally, new-vehicle sales were up 1.1 per cent from April, to 145,224 units. The increase halted a three-month skid in sales.
Passenger cars led the way nationally, with sales up 4.3 per cent from April. Sales of trucks, which includes light and heavy trucks, mini-vans, sport utility vehicles, vans, and buses, fell 2.3 per cent to 66,236 units. That was their lowest monthly sales total since October, 2005.
