Swimmer breaks backstroke record

JULIA Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., broke her Canadian record in the women's 100-metre backstroke final today at Swim Canada's Summer National Championships at Pan Am Pool.

It's the final meet for Wilkinson and Canada's other Olympic team swim members before the Beijing Olympics start Aug. 8.

Julia Wilkinson, of Stratford, Ont., is ecstatic after breaking her own Canadian record in the 100-metre backstroke at the Canadian swimming nationals in the Pan Am Pool Thursday morning.

Wilkinson finished in one minute, .59 seconds to eclipse her previous best 1:01.41 set at the Beijing Trials in April in Montreal. Katy Murdoch of Calgary was second in 1:02.06 and Elizabeth Wycliffe of Kingston, Ont., third in 1:02.67.

The men's 200 freestyle featured five Olympic team nominees, with Vancouver's Brent Hayden -- the Canadian record-holder -- winning in 1:47.43. Brian Johns of Vancouver took the silver at 1:48.88 and Rick Say of Victoria was third in 1:49.19.

In the women's 200 freestyle, Olympic team nominees Geneviève Saumur of Montreal and Erica Morningstar of Calgary finished 1-2 in 2:01.43 and 2:01.78. World junior team member Alexandra Gabor of Whitehorse was third in 2:02.27.

Other winners included Minkwang Shu of Toronto in the men's 50 breaststroke and Matt Rose of Victoria in the 100 backstroke, along with Savannah King of Vancouver in the 1,500 freestyle, Annamay Pierse of Vancouver in the 50 breaststroke and MacKenzie Downing of Victoria in the 200 butterfly.
