Can sex sell fake chicken?

We know sex sells. People for the Ethical Treament of Animals sent skimpily-clad Lettuce Ladies to a KFC outlet at Sherbrook Street and Cumberland Avenue at lunch hour Wednesday, seemingly using skin to sell animal rights and vegetarianism.

PETA Lettuce Lady spokesperson Nicole Matthews draws attention to KFC’s new Classic Vegetarian Sandwich.

“(We’re) offering KFC’s new faux-chicken sandwich, which is available at 65 per cent of the stores in Canada,” said Nicole Matthews, PETA campaigner. “It’s a cholesterol-free and cruelty-free alternative.”

Matthews and Virginia Fort, female campaigners from the Norfolk, Va., PETA headquarters flashed red signs outside the restaurant and offered KFC customers a two-for-one coupon for a vegetarian soy-based sandwich.

The faux-chicken product is a new offering on KFC’s menu in Canada, PETA said, and it marks the conclusion of an agreement between the fast food giant and the animal rights organization, ending five years of Canadian campaigning alleging animal cruelty at KFC farm suppliers.

A statement from PETA said the agreement will include having 65 per cent of suppliers to KFC franchises in Canada phasing in use of controlled-atmosphere killing, improved animal husbandry practices, and forming an animal welfare advisory panel.
