Three dozen neglected animals euthanized

ALMOST three dozen of the 64 neglected dogs seized from a property in Gull Lake have had to be destroyed.
Bill McDonald, CEO of the Winnipeg Humane Society, said provincial animal protection officers were forced to euthanize the animals because they were too sick or were mentally shattered because of the conditions they lived in.
"Six of them came in and they immediately curled themselves up in balls with their faces to the back wall and wouldn't relate to humans," McDonald said on Thursday.
"They stopped eating and drinking. They were essentially committing suicide."
McDonald said the remaining 30 dogs are being housed at the WHS itself and in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, but in the next few days all of the animals will be at the society.
"The couple had seven days to appeal the seizure --and they did not file an appeal -- that's a good thing," he said.
Two weeks ago, the dogs were found caked in dirt and their own feces on the Gull Lake property owned by Peter and Judy Chernecki.
Earlier this week, the RM's council voted to demolish the buildings the dogs were found in because they were structurally unsafe.
McDonald said that after all of the remaining animals are assessed, some could be ready for adoption in about two weeks.
