Top juniors competing at U of M
THE best Canada has to offer in junior track and field are heading to Manitoba this weekend.
The Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships run today through Sunday at the University of Manitoba Stadium.
It will be the second consecutive year Winnipeg has hosted the prestigious meet, and organizers hope it will help grow the sport locally.
"We want to create a legacy from the games," event organizer Randy Paracholski said. "The event gives us a chance to rebuild, buy new equipment to really help the sport develop in the province down the road with these young kids."
More than 500 athletes from across the country will compete this weekend.
Among them is Manitoba's Julia Zrinyi, who just got back from competing in the Junior World Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain, last week.
"It was an amazing experience, definitely a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing," said Zrinyi, 17, No. 1 in Canada in junior girls 800-metre competition.
Zrinyi knows the perks of having home-track advantage.
"I can visualize (the track) way better 'cause I do all my training here and I don't have to worry about anything. I have my own food and my own bed. The track is very homey to me and comforting."
That doesn't matter to 18-year old Brandon McBride from Windsor, Ont., who's coming off a sixth-place finish in the 800 metres at the world juniors in Barcelona.
"I think it's nice and beuatiful," McBride said when asked about Manitoba's facilities. "It's definetly made to run fast, and hopefully I can do that this weekend."
But McBride is unsure whether he'll compete in the 800 metres here.
"My goal this weekend is to come out and (reach my) personal best in the 400 metres," he said. "I'm mentally exhausted right now coming back from the worlds, so if I do well in the 400, I may drop the 800."
The meet gets underway today at 11 a.m. For more information, visit the website www.juniors.athletics.ca .
