Unapproved sign coming down

Crane brought in for $65,000 job

After nearly two years and multiple orders, owners of the Boyd Building have pledged to finally remove an illegal electronic sign.

On Thursday, Russell Knight told a bylaw court judge he and his fellow Boyd Building owners -- including Ray Rybachuk and Ken Carroll -- signed a contract on Aug. 2 with a company to remove the sign at a cost of $65,000.

The Boyd Building owners had been ordered to remove the sign by Aug. 1.

Knight said there were no local companies with a crane strong enough to remove a sign which weighs upwards of 9,000 kilograms.

He said a crane will have to be brought in from out of the city, and it will take at least a week -- or possibly two -- to remove.

"They are showing up on Monday to remove the sign," Knight said in bylaw court.

Officials have given the Boyd Building owners until Sept. 13 to show the work has been completed.

The sign was initially installed in September 2010 without a city permit. Residents of Fred Douglas Place complained of glare from the sign and the city ordered it be removed in late 2010 and again in early 2011, when the sign was switched off.
