A key witness at the Wanda Bruce murder trial gave testimony Thursday that was in stark contrast to what he told court a year ago.
The witness, 17, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, was at the North Point Douglas rooming house two years ago when Solomon Turner got into a fight with Wanda Bruce and Lloyd Lindsay.
The witness said Thursday Bruce and Lindsay attacked Turner as he tried to leave the house, dragged him back into the residence and kicked and punched him before forcing him to the basement, where it looked like one of them killed Turner.
But defence counsel Greg Brodsky reminded the witness that at Bruce's preliminary trial a year ago, the witness testified that Bruce wanted Turner to leave the rooming house, that Turner attacked Bruce and that Bruce was worried about Turner's condition.
Bruce, 34, has been charged with second-degree murder.
Turner, 46, was found by police in the basement of the Austin Street North rooming house on the night of May 10, 2011. He had bled to death earlier in the day after he was stabbed in his thigh.
The murder weapon was never found and no physical evidence was found to link Bruce to Turner's death.
Lindsay, 50, was also charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty May 17, 2012 to manslaughter and was given an eight-year sentence.
Earlier Thursday, Lindsay testified that Turner was alive when he left him in the basement and that he never saw Bruce with a knife or any kind of weapon when she fought with Turner.
The witness, who was 15 at the time, claimed to be the only sober one in the house at the time, and saw Bruce pick up a large wooden-handled knife from a table and then join Lindsay as he pushed Turner into the basement.
The witness said when Bruce and Lindsay returned a couple of minutes later, Bruce no longer had the knife.
The witness said they asked the witness to check on Turner a few minutes later, and the witness found Turner unresponsive and lying in a pool of blood. "I told them, 'I think that guy downstairs is dead,'"
Under cross-examination, Brodsky said the witness testified a year earlier that Bruce came up from the basement and said she was worried Lindsay had killed Turner.
