Woman, 78, dies of injuries sustained in wheelchair van

A 78-year-old city woman is dead after sustaining injuries in a licensed wheelchair service van.

Nancy Sikorski died on Sunday. The incident occurred June 27.

City police and the province's chief medical examiner's office are investigating.

"It's really a shame. I feel very badly for the family," said Joan Wilson, secretary of the Manitoba Taxicab Board, which regulates Winnipeg's taxi industry

Wilson said the taxicab board does not have a lot of information about the incident at this time. She said it would be conducting its own investigation.

Wilson said the van was not involved in a collision.

"It wasn't an accident. He (the driver) made a hard stop at a red light or something," Wilson said.

A radio station, quoting unnamed sources, reported Thursday that Sikorski was not strapped into her wheelchair and went flying when the driver slammed on the brakes.
