Manitoba reports a drop in building permit activity

Manitoba was one of four provinces to report a drop in building permit activity in August, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that Manitoba municipalities issued $177.6 million worth of permits during the month. That was a drop of 4.5 per cent from the previous month, when $186 million worth of permits were issued. However, it was still a 25.3 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when the permit total was only $141.7 million.

August’s decline was concentrated on the residential side of the contruction industry, where permit values were down by 13 per cent to $112.2 million. The non-residential side saw permit values rise by 14.5 per cent to $65.4 million.

Nationally, Statistics Canada said the value of building permits issued in August rose 7.9 per cent to $7.3 billion after a 2.8 per cent drop in July.

The agency says the August increase was due to a 25.2 per cent rise in permits in the non-residential sector with a value of $3.2 billion, the highest level in almost four years.

This offset a 2.3 per cent drop in residential permits, to $4.2 billion.
