Manitobans drive new car sales numbers up

WINNIPEG — Manitoba posted its seventh consecutive year-over-year increase in new vehicle sales in July, although sales were down from the previous month, according to new Statistics Canada figures released today.

The raw numbers, which haven’t been adjusted to take into account seasonal variations in sales activity, show 4,724 new cars and trucks were sold in July in Manitoba.

That was a 7.8 per cent increase from the 4,382 sold in July of last year, but was down 6.4 per cent from the 4,921 units sold in June of this year.

Statistics Canada said July’s tally left unit sales in Manitoba running nine per cent ahead of last year’s pace after the first eight months of the year — 30,468 versus 27,945.

Nationally, new vehicle sales were up five per cent from a year earlier in July — 151,451 versus 144,171 — but down 12.6 per cent from June, when 173,190 units were sold.
