Manufacturing down slightly in Manitoba

Manitoba’s manufacturing industry did a stutter step in October, posting a slight decline in sales after ringing up a healthy gain in the previous month.

Statistics Canada figures released today show the province’s manufacturers shipped out $1.31 billion worth of goods during the month. That was a dip of 0.5 per cent from September’s total of $1.32 billion, and followed a 4.2 per cent increase from August to September.

But despite being down from the previous month, October’s sales total was still a 4.8 per cent improvement from a year earlier, the figures show, when $1.25 billion worth of goods were sold.

Statistics Canada said Manitoba was one of six provinces to see a drop in sales in October. It’s decline was the third smallest among the six.

Canada saw its sales fall by 1.4 per cent to $48.8 billion. Statistics Canada said the decline was mainly due to weaker sales in the aerospace, motor vehicle assembly, and primary metal industries.
