New home prices rising more slowly in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — The cost of buying a new home in Winnipeg rose at a slower pace in July than in the previous month, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said Winnipeg’s new housing price index rose by 0.2 per cent in July. That was less than one-third the 0.7 per cent gain registered in June.

St. John’s had the highest monthly increase among the 21 metropolitan regions surveyed, at 0.6 per cent. Winnipeg tied with two other metropolitan regions — St. Catharines-Niagara and Ottawa-Gatineau — for the fourth largest increase.

Winnipeg also had the third highest year-over-year escalation in new-home prices, at 4.4 per cent. Regina had the largest, at 4.7 per cent, followed by Toronto-Oshawa at 4.6 per cent.

Statistics Canada said Canada’s new housing price index rose by a modest 0.1 per cent from June to July. That followed a 0.2 per cent increase the previous month. The year-over-year gain was 2.3 per cent.
